What are the edges of a swimming pool used for?

Swimming pool coping stones have 3 main functions:
– Safe: non-slip, they prevent slips and falls in the pool.
– Sanitary: the edges protect the water from pollution and other harmful elements coming from outside the pool.
– Aesthetics: in different sizes, colors, shapes, materials, the edges bring a stylish effect to your swimming pool that matches your desires.

Whether you're building or renovating your pool, pool coping plays an important role. They're essential for both beautifying and ensuring safety.

The different models of coping stones

Like all components of a swimming pool, there is a wide range of coping stones to suit all tastes and budgets.
– Natural materials: natural stone and wood remain timeless classics.
– Reconstituted materials (minerals + concrete) for a more realistic effect.
– Composite materials for minimal maintenance.

How to maintain your coping stones?

Preconceived ideas:

– It is a common misconception that using a pressure washer will produce amazing results. While this type of cleaning is easy and effective, it is not suitable for certain materials such as concrete. The joints of the coping stones and the coping stones made from concrete will suffer from this cleaning, which will alter the concrete skin (the top layer of the slab), ultimately allowing water to seep in and cause cracks as soon as the first winter frosts arrive.

– Common to all cement-based products, efflorescence is a white powder that appears on the surface of concrete in the form of irregular deposits. This natural phenomenon disappears over time, particularly thanks to rainwater (slightly acidic). There is therefore no point in trying to scrub your edges to remove these stains, which have no impact on the characteristics of the concrete.

Best practices:

– The edges are always cleaned from the inside out so as not to bring pollution into the pool and avoid permanent stains on the liner.

– Wood is the material that requires the most maintenance and it is best to use products specifically adapted to the use of the swimming pool.

– The ideal product for properly cleaning natural materials such as stone or reconstituted stone remains water and a soap-based product.

Some more specific products are recommended to remove certain stains: JD Plage'Net terrace cleaner (powerful alkaline bactericidal cleaner which removes grease and limescale stains) or JD Détart' Plages (dissolves limescale and traces left by water).

– In the winter when the rain starts to appear, do not hesitate to use a waterproof product to complete the maintenance of your swimming pool and protect your terrace.
