Cleaning a swimming pool necessarily involves manual cleaning or cleaning with a cleaning robot combined with the use of suitable water treatment products. The main suitable pool cleaning products can be listed in different categories: disinfectants, anti-algae, flocculants, and waterline cleaners.
Cleaning your pool is essential for proper maintenance and maintaining water quality.
Disinfectants
Chlorine
Chlorine remains the most widely used disinfectant on the market for water treatment due to its effectiveness but also because it remains a cheap treatment. There are 2 types of chlorine available in a slow version (for weekly treatment of pool water) and a shock version (shock treatment for green water recovery):
• Stabilized chlorine: this chlorine contains stabilizer, a molecule necessary for chlorine to resist the effects of UV rays.
• Unstabilized chlorine: this is chlorine without a stabilizer. It is advisable to add a quantity of stabilizer equivalent to 50 mg/l so that the chlorine can resist the effects of UV rays. The use of unstabilized chlorine is not recommended in regions with hard water (water hardness > 25° F). Never mix Hypo-Chlore stick with stabilized chlorine.
Salt
Salt treatment is done through salt electrolysis , a chemical process that transforms the salt present in the pool into chlorine. The chlorine will destroy the bacteria present in your pool water and then, once exposed to UV rays, it will change back into salt.
Salt is an effective and economical treatment since it continually regenerates itself.
Bromine
Odorless and not sensitive to UV rays unlike chlorine, although they both come from the family (halogens), bromine is an effective treatment but more expensive than chlorine.
Bromine has the same characteristics as chlorine:
• Disinfectant and oxidant: it destroys microbes, bacteria and fungi that can develop in pool water.
• Anti-algae: it destroys algae and prevents their development.
• Residual: it sterilizes the water and makes it sterilizing.
Bromine exists in a slow version for bottom treatment of the pond and in a shock version for clearing green water.
Anti-algae
The anti-algae products on the swimming pool market can be divided into 3 categories
• Preventive anti-algae : it is used as a preventative measure to prevent the formation of algae in the swimming pool.
• Curative Anti-Algae : more concentrated than the version used for prevention, the curative version prevents the proliferation of algae. This category also includes active oxygen ( JD Flash ), specifically used to eliminate green water when shock chlorination becomes ineffective in the presence of pool water saturated with stabilizer.
• Anti Mustard Algae : this is a product specifically designed for mustard algae which can develop in swimming pool water.
Flocculants
The use of a flocculant is recommended when filtration is unable to retain floating particles or when the water becomes cloudy. The principle of flocculation is to agglomerate tiny impurities (invisible to the human eye) so that they form larger particles and can then be recovered by the filter.
• Liquid or stick flocculant (not recommended for use with Desjoyaux filter bags): the flocculant allows the particles to agglomerate and then be sucked up (without passing through the filter to avoid clogging too quickly).
• Flocculant sticks: the sticks are placed in the pre-filter basket (not recommended for use with Desjoyaux filter bags)
• Clarifying products: JD Crystal plus or 4 in 1 products which contain both the disinfectant as well as a flocculant, a clarifier, a chlorine stabilizer and an anti-algae.
Waterline cleaners
Essential for cleaning the pool waterline (marked by the pool water level), waterline cleaners such as JD Gel + are products specifically adapted and non-aggressive for the pool liner.
